That's because when people use self-checkout machines, they're not paying into Social Security or Medicare. In fact, every time someone uses a self-checkout machine, it costs the Social Security Trust Fund about 2.5 cents. Over time, this can add up to big cuts in benefits for retirees and other beneficiaries.
